The fact that green is the color of grass and that blue is the color of the ocean has been a reality since the beginning of time. There are different color mechanisms present in nature, all with their own reasons for occurring. Colors trigger psychological associations. This goes for just seeing one specific color, like the color red, which we associate with fear and danger. Also, the combination of colors triggers a specific psychological association, like the green and black arrow frog, which other animals and humans associate with being poisonous. Some animals use mechanisms that scare of predators; some creatures use color changing as a hiding mechanism.

Camouflage is probably the most famous color mechanism in nature. Animals change their coloring, body shape and behavior to protect themselves. Camouflage helps animals hide by blending in with their surroundings. This mechanism works for both predators and preys. Prey animals basically use camouflage to not get eaten, predators smartly use it to keep the prey from seeing them.

The color of an animal’s fur or feathers comes from pigments in the skin cells. Groups of pigment make different color patterns. When a skin cell’s pigment changes, the color of the animal changes. The color of an animal or plant can change during the seasons. For example, animals in the north often have white fur in winter. When the spring comes, the white fur falls out. Color changes can also happen within minutes. The most famous color changing animal is the chameleon. Chameleons mainly change color in order to communicate with others of their species or to make themselves more attractive to mates, as opposed to using their ability for defense. Many natural surfaces have more than one color, like a tree covered with moss. As a result, animals often have patterns, spots or stripes to help camouflage them.

This is also the reason a young deer has spots. The fawn lies still in the grass while its mother is away. Its spotted coat looks like patches of sunlight falling on the forest floor.

Animals and plants have evolved visual warning to alert other animals and people that they are toxic or unpalatable. This mechanism is called aposematism. Warning colors send a signal to predators to keep away, often because the owner is poisonous. Warning colors
